Novell Netware 6.5 License 12

Server licensing on early versions of NetWare 286 is accomplished by using a key card. The key card was designed for an 8-bit ISA bus, and has a serial number encoded on a ROM chip. The serial number has to match the serial number of the NetWare software running on the server. To broaden the hardware base, particularly to machines using the IBM MCA bus, later versions of NetWare 2.x do not require the key card; serialised license floppy disks are used in place of the key cards.

Version 4 in 1993 introduced NetWare Directory Services, later re-branded as Novell Directory Services (NDS), based on X.500, which replaced the Bindery with a global directory service, in which the infrastructure was described and managed in a single place. Additionally, NDS provided an extensible schema, allowing the introduction of new object types. This allowed a single user authentication to NDS to govern access to any server in the directory tree structure. Users could therefore access network resources no matter on which server they resided, although user license counts were still tied to individual servers. (Large enterprises could opt for a license model giving them essentially unlimited per-server users if they let Novell audit their total user count.)

NetWare 6 was released in October 2001, shortly after its predecessor. This version has a simplified licensing scheme based on users, not server connections. This allows unlimited connections per user to any number of NetWare servers in the network.[22] Novell Cluster Services was also improved to support 32-node clusters;[23] the base NetWare 6.0 product included a two-node clustering license.

Consequent to Novell's acquisitions of Ximian and the German Linux distributor SuSE, Novell moved away from NetWare and shifted its focus towards Linux. Marketing was focused on getting faithful NetWare users to move to the Linux platform for future releases.[24] The clearest indication of this direction was Novell's controversial decision to release Open Enterprise Server on Linux only, not NetWare. Novell later watered down this decision and stated that NetWare's 90 million users would be supported until at least 2015.[25] Meanwhile, many former NetWare customers rejected the confusing mix of licensed software running on an open-source Linux operating system in favor of moving to complete Open Source solutions such as those offered by Red Hat.[26]

License agreements are always present in installations these days and NetWare 6.5 is no exception. If you have some time, feel free to read through both of the license agreements. When you are done, press [F10] to continue the installation.

Understanding NetWare 5 licensing:NetWare 5 Licensing uses DS to store the license information. There are three objects, which are stored in the tree: NLS License Server, NLS Product Container and NLS License Certificate. There is a license container for a server license and a license container for a connection license. Initially the NLS_LSP object will reside in the same container as the server object and will reflect the name of the server "NLS_LSP_". The server object has an attribute that tells it where the LSP object is in the tree. The NLS_LSP object is created when the schema is extended with SETUPNLS.NLM or NWCONFIG License Options Set up Licensing service.Initially the SERVER LICENSE is created when installing the server license and will reside in a container, which is created in the same container as the server object. The license container name "Novell+NetWare 5 Server+500" describes the type of license and the count. The license container will store the trending information for the previous 15 months. This container can be moved up the tree to centralize licensing with out moving the server object. If the license container is moved down the tree and the server object is not moved to the same location, licensing will cease to function. The license certificate is stored within the license container and is named the same as the serial number. Both licensing containers ("Novell+NetWare 5 Server+500", "Novell+NetWare 5 Conn SCL+500") should be in the same containerInitially the CONNECTION LICENSE is created when installing the server license and will reside in a container, which is created in the same container as the server object. The license container name "Novell+NetWare 5 Conn SCL+500" describes the type of license and the count. Both licensing containers ("Novell+NetWare 5Server+500", "Novell+NetWare 5 ConnSCL+500") should be in the same container. When Directory Services is loaded and the DS database is open, the License Server Provider will then discover the NLS: License Service Provider object of the server in the tree to provide the license service. There are two types of licenses which can be installed; Non-restricted License "MLA" and/or restricted License "Unique license per server". The non-restricted license is a generic license, which can be installed on many servers. All servers will report the same serial number. The server does not report any duplicate license messages. This license will allow the network administrator to change the name of the server in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file with out any adverse effect. The restricted license is not a generic license. Each server is required to have a unique base server license. In addition one or more connection licenses may be installed per server . In the event that two servers have the same license installed, the server will report a duplicate license message. This license will NOT allow the network administrator to change the name of the server in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file with out any adverse effect. If the server name is changed in the AUTOEXEC.NCF, the file server assignment must be changed using NWADMIN. NetWare 5 will allow two grace logins connections without any license installed. If there is no license installed error messages will be displayed at the server console. Each License Envelope contains within it a server license and a user license.NetWare 5 has two debug tools built in which may help troubleshoot licensing issues. At install time a file calledSYS:SYSTEM\NLSI.DBG will be created to trace NetWare Licensing. After NetWare is installed there is a SET parameter "SET NLSTRACE=2". This will create a file called SYS:SYSTEM\NLSTRACE.DBG. Below are the options describing the SET parameter.NLSTRACE = 0Write fileNLSTRACE = 1Output to screenNLSTRACE = 2Create fileThere are two SET parameters which deal with licensing: SET Dirty Certificate Cache Delay Time = can be range from 1 minute to 1 hour and can be set in the STARTUP.NCF file.Description: Minimum time the licensing services wait before writing a dirty certificate cache to DS.Example: SET Dirty Certificate Cache Delay Time = 1 MinSet NLS Search Type =

Clicking Step 2: View and Update NDS Version launches the Installation Wizard in Update NDS mode, as shown in Figure 3.3. The Installation Wizard searches the specified tree or container to determine whether the NDS installations on the existing servers require updates. If you know what NDS tree and container will contain the new server, you should enter the information by typing netware://Trees/treename/containername, as explained in the Description area of the utility. If you prefer, you can click the Browse button to launch the NDS Tree Browser and then select the tree and topmost container and click OK. When the tree information is defined, you should indicate whether the Installation Wizard should search for NDS servers only in the selected container or in subordinate containers as well. If there are NDS servers in subcontainers in the tree, it is important that they are included in the search. If they are not updated, they will not be able to interact with the NetWare 6 server. Click Next to proceed with the installation.

The Licensing group manages site licensed and individually-owned software for current faculty, staff, and enrolled students. This licensed software has been procured to assist Clemson University users with their daily computing tasks. We may keep titles on the list for 2 years or more after the license has expired because in many cases activating the license again only requires a maintenance fee versus the full product price. We want our users to know that this is an option if they see it on the list before purchasing.

Please click on individual titles for more information. Many software products are available for all faculty, staff, and students to use. Some, however, are designated for specific college or group use. In the cases where a license is designated as "network" (as opposed to "standalone"), that designation refers to whether or not the license is tied to an on-campus license server. The standalone version of the license will be the better install option for laptops that may be used from on- or off-campus; the network license will be appropriate for desktop or departmental machines.

Most titles listed below require a license to be purchased or require the user to be a member of the group that owns the software. If you need a particular piece of software and don't see it on the software list below or want more information about a title, you can inquire by sending an email to licensing@clemson.edu. This will generate a ticket to track your issue. You'll receive an update to your ticket instructing you how to download the software in question or in some cases, you may be directed to your area consultant for installation. If you need to purchase a license, please include the desired title, quantity, and end user's username.
