A series of both 250m and 30m landcover products have been produced starting for 2005. The latest product is a 30-meter spatial resolution 2020 landcover for North America. This new land cover map, created from a composite of images assembled from satellite observations (Landsat), harmonizes land cover classification into 19 comparable classes across Canada, Mexico and the United States. The NALCMS land cover classes are based on the Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) standard developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

These are meant to provide additional information to the impervious estimates by allowing distinction or separation of these different types of impervious and developed usage.

Some suspect increases in sagebrush cover are projected in the Southern Great Basin and Southern Colorado Plateau, which we interpret as model error. We have developed a mask to apply to the future sagebrush cover layers. Masked areas meet three criteria: 1) they are within the sagebrush biome (Jeffries and Finn 2019), 2) within the following EPA level 3 ecoregions: Arizona/New Mexico Mountains, Arizona/New Mexico Plateau (excluding the San Luis Valley from the mask), Colorado Plateaus (excluding the Uinta Basin from the mask), Mojave Basin and Range, and Sonoran Basin and Range, and 3) have a maximum of 0% sagebrush cover observed over the 1985-2020 RCMAP time-series.

The choice of geographic units will also influence the ADI value. In the case of the ADI the Census Block Group is the geographic unit of construction, as the Census Block Group is considered the closest approximation to a "neighborhood". As such, we can only recommend linking the ADI to census block groups as other geographic units (including 5-digit ZIP codes, ZCTA, and others) will not be valid. Please see the FAQ below for additional download and linkage guidance.

The MEDEP GIS Unit coordinates the collection and submittal of GIS data from MEDEP program staff and environmental consultants. This data supports the geographic evaluation of sites and study areas in conjunction with environmental sampling data. A set of Spatial Data Collection Guidelines is now available to assist with submittal of data to the MEDEP Spatial Database.

To respond to this need, EPA developed three data products that consistently measure the built environment and transit accessibility of neighborhoods across metropolitan regions and across the United States. Each product summarizes the characteristics of census block groups [ii]. Users can download data, browse the data in interactive maps, or access the data through web services [iii].

Additionally, EPA worked with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to develop the Smart Location Calculator, a dataset and interactive tool that measures the location efficiency of workplace locations. The interactive map allows users to explore the data, download the dataset, and access the accompanying documentation.
